School's Hard with Miami on the Brain!

Both Mj and I were struggling this week to stay "focused" on school. We've got Miami on the brain! We leave Sunday for 2 weeks!!!!! Here's what we did this week!

Bible:
Mj reviewed the 4 verses he has learned in this Bible Unit. We also reviewed the Creation account, Noah, and Abraham.

English:
Mj wrote a personal experience story. He wrote about our trip to the Whitaker Center.
The planning phase - Word Web and first draft
The Revising Phase

The proofreading phase
The Published Paper

Reading:
Mj read a story about a proud bug and about Samuel.
Math:
Mj reviewed even numbers, greater than/less than, and expanded form of numbers

Science:
Mj learned about fossils. Mj is hoping to find dinosaur bones on our trip.

States:
We're learning about the states we're driving through on our way to Miami. We did Pennsylvania last week.

We will only be in Maryland and West Virginia for an hour.

Virginia - The state that never ends
Mj working on his work book for North Carolina and South Carolina. He's looking forward to seeing two of his uncles in South Carolina when we stop for the night.
Georgia and Florida - Jadyn was having some fun with the maps! ;)

Gabe is sitting so well now and he can even get from his belly to a sitting position. He also started crawling on Wednesday!!!!! Where did my little baby go? He is so proud of himself when he gets to a toy (or our dog) all by himself! This is a whole new world for him now!=)
School is a lot of hard work!
Check out what Jadyn's been up to in Tot School.

Off to Miami for 2 weeks!!!!! Woo Hoo!!!!!!!

Tot School - "D"

Jadyn is 27 months old
Tot School

Jadyn was more into playing than actual sitting down and having school so that's what we did - lots and lots of playing!

Jadyn always enjoys crafts so we made a Dinosaur and daisy. Check out Totally Tots for these cute crafts! Jadyn also colored "D" and "d".
We're all in vacation mode here. We leave Sunday for Miami so we had a lot of pajama school days this week. Jadyn borrowed her cousin's Lightning McQueen pajamas and cried when I told her they needed washed! Can you tell she was up early?! LOL
Jadyn decided to use her workbox as a hat. I think it's quite the fashion statement.
Jadyn is learning her colors. She has red and green down pretty well. Confessions of a Homeschooler had this really great printable color matching puzzle.
Jadyn helping me erase the board after Mj's math lesson.
My little tomboy loves racing hotwheel cars!

Nothing like playing with vintage Fisher Price toys!
I used shredded paper and hid farm animals in the paper. I think she had more fun putting the paper on her head than actually finding the animals.
My favorite pic of the week!!! Thank you God for giving me these wonderful little miracles!

Now to enjoy a 2 week vacation with my wonderful family!!! Off to Miami we go!!!=)

A Quick Trip to the Store for our Long Drive to Miami

I just ran out to get a couple of things for our trip. I think I did pretty good considering I was in a rush to clip coupons and to write out my lists.

I love the Kraft $5/5 coupons!!! Great deal on cheese!

I don't normally spend more than $5 at CVS, but since I'm gone for 2 weeks on vacation I need lots of diapers so this deal was important to get!

The King's Christmas List -by Eldon Johnson Illustrated by Bonnie Leick - Review

The King's Christmas List is a children's story about the importance of giving at Christmas time. The King has invited Emma and her dog Shu Shu to His birthday party. Along the way she sees others who are less-fortunate than her. She gives up possessions that are important to her to help those in need. At the King's party she notices that no one is giving gifts to the King. She finds out that the King wants people to give to others - that is His Christmas wish.

Positives: My children are 7 years old and 2 years old and they enjoyed the pictures and the story line. I liked the lesson of "it's more important to give than to receive." This is an important lesson for any time of the year for children and adults.

Negatives: Giving is very important any time of the year, but the most important reason we celebrate Christmas is because Jesus came down to earth as a baby and gave up the glory of Heaven because He loves me. He came to earth to die on a cross for my sin! I wish this was more prevelant in the story.

Overall, a very nice book. I think parents can use this book as a spring board to the importance of giving the gospel. That is the most important need that people have.

My rating: 4/5 stars

Week 3 - Better than Last Week.

Woo Hoo! 3 weeks down!!! One more week of school then a 2 week family vacation to Miami!! I'm so excited!!! We had a pretty good week this week. Mj's getting into some new stuff for him. Writing is not his strong point, but he's doing a better job of not giving me one sentence answers. Here's our week in review.

Mj looks forward to our morning board. He's doing a great job of remembering how to write the date. We pray for our church's missionary of the month, learn a character quality for the week (this week was self-control), and work on our place value by putting in the number of days of school. I got my ideas from Homeschool Creations and 1+1+1=1.

Bible:
Mj learned about God's promise to Abraham to make him a great nation and that all the families of the earth would be blessed through Abraham. He learned that that meant that the Messiah would come from Abraham's line. He also learned about Abraham's obedience to God by being willing to sacrifice his son Isaac. Mj memorized Gen. 15:6 "And he (Abraham) believed in the Lord; and He counted it to him for righteousness."

Mj puts Abraham and Sarah on our Bible timeline.
English:
Mj learned why we use a thesaurus. And he also learned about the writing process. We went through the writing process together and wrote a story about our trip to the library.

The planning and drafting phase of the writing process.
The revision and proofreading phase.
The publishing phase

Time out for some Brainquest cards! A favorite for Mj!
Reading:
Mj reviewed Miss Long and her friends Miss Silent and Marker e. He also read a story about a girl who wanted friends her age.

Mj putting Miss Long and Miss Silent on the word "glue".
Mj reading "Someone My Age".
Mj is also reading a missionary book for our church's missions conference in October. He's really enjoying this book! It's harder than anything he has read before and he's doing a great job!
Math:
Mj is reviewing place value in math this week.
Spelling:
Mj had a new spelling list this week that focused on double consonant endings. He also worked on some dictionary drills focusing on alphabetical order.
Science:
We started our chapter on the earth. Mj learned about the differences in the evolution theory and the creation theory. I can tell that he's been listening to Patch the Pirate's Evolution Revolution a lot. A lot of his answers were straight from that tape. "You can't make a monkey out of me!" LOL

Heritage Studies:
Mj learned about hospitals in colonial times and compared them to the hospitals of today. He also learned about the differences between an emergency and a non-emergency. We role-played an emergency and he pretended to dial 9-1-1 and I was the operator.

Art:
Mj made a craft stick puzzle. I got the idea from Family Fun magazine.
Yes, spiderman came to school this week.
To get ready for our trip to Miami we will be studying each state that we're driving through. So today we started with our state - Pennsylvania. We traced the route we'll be taking through Pa. and then learned some interesting facts about Pa. It was the 2nd state to join the country. It's known for Amish. (Mj didn't realize those were what you called the people in horse and buggies he just thought they were horse riders. LOL) And of course Pa is home to the Hershey's Chocolate Factory. Yum!
The highlight of the week was Geocaching!!!

And Gabe's almost crawling!! He's been learning a lot, too! Can't believe my baby boy is already at this stage! Where have the last 7 and 1/2 months gone?!
You can also check out what Jadyn's been up to in Tot school.
